Trump imposes 50% tariffs on Brazil and sanctions Moraes with Magnitsky Act

- Alexandre de Moraes is subject to sanctions under the Magnitsky Act.
- Dollar falls with exemptions, Embraer and real appreciate
Current US President Donald Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on all imports from Brazil, including copper products, in a measure considered one of the most aggressive of his trade policies. The decree takes effect in seven days, but has already provoked market reactions and a direct impact on the Brazilian currency.
Despite the severity of the restrictions, the list of exceptions included strategic items such as orange juice, civil aircraft, and aviation parts, favoring Embraer, which has a strong industrial presence in the US. The market reacted positively to the exclusion of these items: the real, which had fallen 1% with the initial announcement, ended the day up 0,6% against the dollar. Embraer saw its shares rise 11,5%, while Weg and Suzano advanced more than 1,7%.
The White House's official justification highlights national security risks and accuses Brazil of hostile practices. The document also criticizes the prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro, calling it "politically motivated persecution."
Meanwhile, Trump approved a blanket 50% tariff on all copper imports, regardless of origin. This decision takes effect in two days and has already caused a sharp drop in the price of the metal in the US. Copper fell 18% in after-market trading, recording its largest daily decline since 1989. Giants Freeport-McMoRan and Southern Copper suffered declines of 10% and 6%, respectively.
Furthermore, the US announced sanctions against Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes under the Global Magnitsky Act. The measure, considered one of the strictest against human rights violations and corruption, was formalized by the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
The decision drew immediate reactions from the Brazilian government. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed solidarity with Moraes and called the sanction an unacceptable attempt to interfere in the national judiciary. The Supreme Federal Court (STF) also issued a statement reinforcing that all of the minister's decisions were validated by his peers.
The sanction had repercussions on social media, with businessman Elon Musk commenting on the measure with the expression: “if you touch it, you get it.”
