Reddit sues Perplexity and other companies for illegal data scraping
Jinse Finance reported that Reddit has filed lawsuits against Perplexity AI and three other companies, accusing them of unauthorized data scraping from the Reddit website. According to the lawsuit filed Wednesday in Manhattan federal court, data scraping companies Oxylabs UAB, AWMProxy, and SerpApi collected Reddit data through Google search results with the intention of reselling this data. The lawsuit states that Perplexity purchased this data from at least one of these companies. As AI models that rely on large amounts of data for training and delivering relevant results have emerged, Reddit's ever-growing data repository has become a valuable commodity. Reddit has signed agreements with OpenAI and Alphabet authorizing them to use Reddit data for training, but has also taken legal action against some companies that have not signed formal agreements. Earlier this year, Reddit also filed a similar data scraping lawsuit against Anthropic in a San Francisco court.
