Petco Reports Customer Data Exposure

Petco, a major provider of pet products and services, has revealed a data breach that impacted its customers' personal information, according to a recent filing with California's attorney general.

The state released a sample notification letter that Petco is distributing to those affected. In this letter, Petco explained that a misconfigured setting in one of its software tools unintentionally made certain files accessible online. The company stated it discovered the problem internally and acted quickly to resolve the issue and restrict further online access to the files.

Despite this disclosure, the notification did not clarify what specific types of personal data were exposed during the incident.

Petco spokesperson Ventura Olvera informed TechCrunch that more details were provided directly to individuals whose information was involved.

However, Olvera did not answer additional questions regarding the total number of affected customers or the exact nature of the compromised data.

Under California regulations, companies must report breaches that impact at least 500 state residents, indicating that a minimum of 500 Petco customers in California were affected. The company has also notified an undisclosed number of individuals in Massachusetts and three people in Montana, as reported by state authorities.

To support those impacted, Petco is offering complimentary credit and identity theft monitoring services. California law mandates that such resources be provided if sensitive information like driver’s license or Social Security numbers are involved in a breach.

Petco’s letter also noted that the application’s settings were corrected after the error was found, and that new security measures and technical safeguards have been put in place to better protect its systems.
