How Token Unlocks Could Shake Up Crypto in June

In June, about $3.3 billion worth of cryptocurrency tokens will be released into the market as scheduled lockup periods come to an end. This marks a 32% decrease from May, when $4.9 billion in tokens were unlocked. Token unlocking is a routine part of crypto projects, where tokens are temporarily "locked" to prevent early investors or team members from selling too soon. Once these lockups expire, the tokens become available for trading or use.
The unlocking process happens in two ways: cliff unlocks, where a large number of tokens are released all at once, and linear unlocks, where tokens are released gradually over time. In June, $1.4 billion will come from cliff unlocks, and $1.9 billion through linear ones.
Some of the biggest releases include Metars Genesis (MRS), which will unlock $193 million in tokens to support an AI partnership, and Sui, which will release $160 million worth of tokens mainly to investors and developers. Other notable projects unlocking tokens include Fasttoken, Aptos, LayerZero, ZKsync, and Arbitrum, with values ranging from $49 million to $88 million. These unlocks could influence the market, depending on investor behavior and demand.

Futures Market Updates
In the past 24 hours, ETH futures have shown significantly higher activity than BTC futures, with ETH volume surging by 67.2% compared to BTC’s 11.63%. ETH open interest also rose more sharply, up 8.02% versus BTC’s 1.66%, suggesting stronger market engagement. However, ETH saw disproportionately higher short liquidations ($54.76M) compared to BTC ($24.01M), indicating heavier short-side losses on ETH. The long/short ratio was nearly balanced for BTC, while ETH showed a slight long bias. Additionally, ETH's funding rate (0.0068%) exceeded BTC's (0.0034%), pointing to a more bullish sentiment among ETH traders.
