Bloomberg: Fed Chairman Powell hinted at a pause in rate hikes in June

According to Bloomberg, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell hinted at a pause in rate hikes next month and said a tighter credit environment could mean a decline in peak policy rates. The next rate meeting will be held on June 13 and 14 .

Powell said in his speech at the Fed meeting in Washington on the 19th: "We have made a lot of progress on policy tightening, and the policy stance is restrictive. In addition, we face uncertainty in the lagged effects of tightening and the recent credit crunch caused by banking sector stress. Having come this far , we can look at the data and the evolving outlook first , and then make a cautious assessment . "

Kathy Bostjancic, an economist at Nationwide Life Insurance Company, said that Powell's speech on the 19th showed that his baseline is to pause rate hikes in June , to assess the new data . However, Bostjančić also believes that if the economic data before the next meeting, including the latest data on the consumer price index is higher than expected, Powell may still decide to raise interest rates.
