Iran war pushes oil prices higher, exacerbating wealth disparity in the United States
Golden Ten Data, May 17 — According to The Wall Street Journal, the largest oil supply disruption in history is intensifying economic disparities within the United States. Based on analysis of OPIS pricing data and federal demand data, during the Iran war period, cumulative spending by Americans on gasoline and diesel was about $45 billion higher compared to the same period last year. Surging oil prices are consuming a larger share of income for low- and middle-income consumers, while investors in oil and gas companies are seeing their portfolios continue to appreciate. Since the beginning of this year, the S&P 500 energy sector has risen by 32%, helping shareholders offset some of the impact of inflation. According to data from Evaluate Energy, a subsidiary of analytics firm Geologic, total earnings for oil and natural gas companies reached their highest level in years in the first quarter. Isabella Weber, an economics professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, stated, “If you look at different income groups in the United States, it’s really the wealthiest segment that is benefiting. The vast majority of people gain almost nothing, and in fact are shouldering an even greater cost burden.”
