Golden Ten Data reported on May 20 that Maximo Torero, Chief Economist of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, stated on May 20 local time that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz is not a temporary shipping disruption but the beginning of a systemic agri-food shock that could trigger a severe global food price crisis within six to twelve months. To avoid such consequences, it is necessary to develop alternative trade routes, reduce export restrictions, ensure the flow of humanitarian supplies, and provide buffer mechanisms to cope with higher transportation costs. The Food and Agriculture Organization believes the window for taking preventive measures is quickly closing. Currently, the decisions made by agricultural operators and governments in areas such as fertilizer application, fertilizer imports, agricultural financing, and crop selection will directly determine whether a severe global food price crisis will occur in the next six to twelve months.
