Tokyo Gas raises basic fees for the first time in nearly 50 years
According to Golden Ten Data on April 27, Tokyo Gas will raise its basic fees for the first time in nearly half a century to offset rising costs and declining demand. The company announced on Monday that the average household's monthly bill will increase by about 2.6% starting in October. A spokesperson stated that this is the first increase in the fixed portion of fees (i.e., basic charges) since 1980. The price hike reflects the rising costs required to maintain services, including spending on call centers, information systems, as well as investments to ensure the safety of gas equipment. This move comes as Japanese households and businesses face a resurgence of inflation, with the Middle East conflict pushing up gasoline and electricity costs. The floating portion of electricity and gas bills (fuel cost adjustment) is updated monthly based on changes in overseas prices.
