According to energy storage project announcements tracked by BloombergNEF, many battery systems are being colocated with on-site fossil fuel power generation equipment at data centers, including some of the world’s largest AI data center complexes. The batteries are used to provide more reliable electricity to data centers, fill power generation gaps, and help prevent damage to gas turbines; however, this model also results in the emission of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate warming and causes local air pollution.
