New Zealand government plans to strengthen energy security by adding insurance through "paper options" for "physical fuel"Golden Ten Data reported on March 30 that New Zealand is considering using its International Energy Agency "reserve certificates" as an "insurance policy" against future fuel supply shortages. New Zealand Prime Minister Luxon stated in Wellington on Monday that the International Energy Agency crude oil or refined product reserve certificates held by New Zealand are not urgently needed at the moment, and the proposed plan may swap these reserve certificates for gasoline, diesel, or jet fuel that the country actually requires. He indicated that this strategy could ensure additional supplies for the country before the end of June. Luxon and his ministers have been working with fuel importers to ensure sufficient supply while also developing contingency plans in case inventories drop to dangerously low levels. The government hopes to avoid taking aggressive measures that could hurt the production sector and hinder economic growth. In addition to the existing minimum supply obligations, the government has been exploring plans to secure extra fuel supplies. Earlier today, the New Zealand government stated that as of March 25, the country’s onshore or in-transit diesel inventory could supply for 55 days, gasoline for 59 days, and jet fuel for 50 days.
