According to Decrypt's report on August 13th, the DeFi Education Fund (DEF) reached an agreement with True Return Systems (TRS) on Monday to purchase a patent for a technology similar to an oracle. This controversial patent is the core of two legal disputes against MakerDAO and Compound. DEF claims that TRS sued MakerDAO and Compound in 2022 for using a technology similar to an oracle, claiming to have a patent for "a method and system for separating computerized ledger storage and processing to improve functionality." However, DEF and the legal advisors for these two protocols objected to these allegations, believing that the patent litigation was too broad.Court documents show that TRS's lawsuit aimed to prohibit these protocols from "manufacturing, using or selling" products based on similar oracle technology. However, this was never implemented. TRS applied to terminate the lawsuit against these protocols on Monday. This decision was made shortly after the company agreed to sell its patent to DEF. Tuminelli stated that this patent purchase not only ensures that MakerDAO and Compound can continue to use oracle-like technology to support their on-chain price information, but also ensures that other protocols can use the technology for many other applications. DEF plans to make the patent available to the public, meaning that every protocol has the legal right to use the oracle-like technology mentioned in its intellectual property documents.
