Matter Labs CEO: As L2 increases, fragmentation is the next major challenge that needs to be addressed in the industry
Alex Gluchowski, CEO of Matter Labs, the main developer of ZKsync, believes that as L2 increases gradually, fragmentation is the next major challenge to be solved in the blockchain field. He stated that the new competition will be between projects providing interoperability solutions. "More specifically, it's between Optimism's Superchain and Matter Labs' Elastic Chain because they are the only two ecosystems in blockchain that have practically implemented interoperability." Gluchowski expressed his doubt about whether Optimism's interoperability plan could easily be realized if its system was not upgraded to include zero-knowledge proofs. "These are complex technologies," said Gluchowski. He suggested redefining L2 chains and considering them useful for specific use cases. "The real question is do we have important L2s? I don't think we need too many general-purpose L2s but we certainly need some application-specific or community-specific L2s."
