Telegram’s founder and CEO, Pavel Durov, is facing serious criminal charges in France related to activities on his messaging platform.

Durov was detained last weekend at Le Bourget airport and appeared before a French judge on August 28.

French authorities have charged Durov with enabling criminal gangs to use Telegram for drug trafficking, fraud, child pornography distribution, and money laundering.

The Paris court set his bail at €5 million ($5.5 million), with the condition that Durov must remain in France during the legal proceedings.

Despite these charges, prosecutors have noted that Durov has claimed he has “nothing to hide.”

French President Emmanuel Macron commented on the case, stating that while France values freedom of expression, it must be practiced “within a legal framework.”

Some of the charges against Durov could lead to a 10-year prison sentence and a maximum fine of €500,000 if he is convicted.

Paris prosecutors argue that Telegram either ignored or failed to comply with legal data requests, which they suggest indicates “complicity” by the platform.

Although Durov has been in detention since Saturday, Telegram has defended its practices, asserting that it follows all EU regulations and enforces moderation policies.

The company has labeled the accusations as "absurd," arguing that neither a platform nor its owner should be held responsible for the misuse of the platform by others.
