Russians Fear Loss of ‘Primary Source of Information’ After Telegram Founder's Arrest
According to Fortune, the arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov in France has sparked concern in Russia.
Since the February 2022 conflict in Ukraine, Telegram has been one of the few uncensored sources of information in Russia. According to Mediascope research, Telegram has become the fourth most popular online service in Russia. According to political scientist Tatiana Stanovaya, Telegram has now become ‘the main source of information’ for those seeking independent views.
However, Durov has been indicted for failing to curb extremist and illegal content on the platform and has been released on bail but is not allowed to leave France. In addition, the European Commission is investigating whether Telegram needs to comply with stricter regulations.
