Australia releases voluntary AI safety framework

Australia has introduced a voluntary framework aimed at promoting ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI), featuring ten key principles focused on risk management, transparency, human oversight, and fairness.

The guidelines, released by the Australian government, are designed to ensure AI systems operate safely and equitably while preparing the ground for future regulations.

Although not legally binding, the framework aligns with international standards, particularly those in the EU, and is intended to shape future policy directions.

Dean Lacheca, a VP analyst at Gartner, views the new standards as a positive step toward providing government agencies and industry sectors with guidance on AI safety.

“The voluntary AI safety standard is a good first step towards giving both government agencies and other industry sectors some certainty around the safe use of AI,” Lacheca said.

However, he also pointed out that implementing these guidelines would require considerable effort and expertise.

The framework emphasises risk assessment processes to identify and mitigate potential hazards in AI systems.

It calls for transparency in how AI models operate and stresses human oversight to prevent over-reliance on automated systems.

Fairness is a central principle, urging developers to avoid biases, especially in sensitive sectors like employment and healthcare.

An accompanying report noted the confusion caused by inconsistent approaches to AI development across Australia, making it challenging for organisations to navigate AI safety practices.

“While there are examples of good practice throughout Australia, approaches are inconsistent,” the report stated.

This inconsistency complicates efforts to create and use AI in a responsible and safe manner.

To address these concerns, the framework includes principles around non-discrimination, ensuring AI does not perpetuate biases, and privacy protection, which mandates that personal data used in AI systems must comply with Australian privacy laws.

Robust security measures are also highlighted to protect AI systems from unauthorised access and misuse.

House Bill 2749 will not allow investment but will transfer unclaimed assets, airdrops, and staking rewards into a reserve, creating AZ’s first crypto reserve. Earlier, Hobbs vetoed Senate Bill 1025, which would have allowed the state to invest up to 10% of treasury and pension assets in digital assets.
