Pavel Durov announces disabling of personal geolocation on Telegram
Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced on September 6 that the platform is removing several features, including media uploads to its “Telegraph” blog and the “People Nearby” geolocation feature.
Durov explained that the decision to cut media uploads was due to misuse by a small fraction of malicious actors, although most users did not abuse these features.
He emphasised that while only “0.001% involved in illicit activities,” their actions posed a disproportionate risk to the majority of Telegram’s law-abiding users.
The “People Nearby” feature, which enabled personal geolocation tracking, is also being removed and replaced with a “businesses nearby” option.
Durov noted that the personal geolocation feature was only used by a tiny minority of Telegram users.
He pledged that this year, Telegram aims to improve its moderation efforts, shifting from a criticised area to one praised by the community.
French prosecutors have accused Durov and Telegram of complicity in the spread of child pornography due to perceived lax content moderation policies.
On August 28, 2024, French authorities charged Durov with money laundering, criminal association, and offering “cryptology” services without a license.
French law enforcement issued arrest warrants for Durov and his brother, Nikolai, in March 2024, alleging non-cooperation in an investigation to identify a specific user involved in sharing child abuse materials.
The investigation began after cybercrime investigators in Paris discovered a Telegram chatroom attempting to lure underage girls for exploitation.
On September 5, Durov broke his silence since his arrest, using his Telegram channel to clarify the recent events surrounding the accusations.
Telegram has shown a commitment to changing its content moderation approach by revising the language about private chat moderation in its Frequently Asked Questions section.
The platform has also made adjustments by removing or limiting features to enhance safety and security for its users.
