UK Parliament may summon Elon Musk over X's misinformation issues

UK Parliament may summon Elon Musk over X's misinformation issues

Labour Member of Parliament Dawn Butler has revealed plans to potentially summon Elon Musk to testify before the United Kingdom Parliament regarding the operations of his social media platform, X, and its role in spreading misinformation.

Butler, who is running for the chair of the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee, stated in an interview with the Financial Times that Musk is “someone we’d like to invite” as a witness to discuss X's practices.

Butler's initiative is also supported by her rival for the committee chair position, Labour MP Chi Onwurah, who advocates for an inquiry into how social media companies use algorithms to disseminate misinformation.

Butler emphasized, “It is vital for the committee to formally examine the use of algorithms in pushing hateful material — and the moderation of such content — on X and other social media platforms.”

The push to summon Musk comes amidst heightened tensions between him and British politicians following the anti-immigration riots that occurred across the UK after a tragic knife attack in Southport, where three young girls were killed.

According to a report by Politico, X was pivotal in spreading false information about the attack, which fueled the riots and complicated efforts to restore order.

Musk has accused UK authorities of a “one-sided” response to the unrest, suggesting that “civil war is inevitable” in the country.

Both Butler and Onwurah have pledged to demand greater transparency from X if elected to lead the tech oversight panel.

Onwurah stressed, “The really important points here are the way algorithms of platforms promote and amplify misinformation and the spreading of racial hatred, and how the platforms’ business models rely on that.”

Musk's platform X is also facing legal challenges in Brazil, where it is currently suspended following a ruling by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

The suspension came after Musk refused to comply with local regulations, including appointing a legal representative for X in Brazil.

The Brazilian judiciary is investigating the platform for allegedly spreading misinformation linked to former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Despite Musk's protests, labeling the court's actions as censorship, the suspension was upheld by the Supreme Court, and X remains blocked, with users facing fines for accessing it via VPNs.

X must also pay over $3 million in penalties to restore operations in Brazil.
