Ether DevOps to Decide Whether Pectra Will Be Split Into Two Forks at Thursday's Consensus Meeting

Parithosh Jayanthi, the EF DevOps engineer who pushed for splitting the Ether Pectra upgrade, said, “We're discussing splitting Pectra into two forks, primarily to reduce the risk of bugs and speed up the delivery of both,” according to CoinDesk. On Thursday, EtherOps developers will decide whether Pectra will be split into two forks at the upcoming EtherOps Core Developer Consensus Meeting. If developers agree to the split, the first package could be available in 2025 (as early as February).

Among other things, the first part of Pectra will include the Ether Improvement Proposal (EIP), which includes EIP-7702 and is aimed at improving wallets. The second part will see EIPs aimed at upgrading Ether virtual machines, known as EOFs.EF researcher Ansgar Dietrichs said that Ether developers don't have too much of a problem with the possibility of a fork, but one drawback would be pushing EIP-7594, known as PeerDAS, into a second package. PeerDAS is designed to improve data availability on Ether, and with the delay in bringing the feature online, the second layer of the blockchain could be slightly more expensive for the time being.
