Seattle airport faces $6M Bitcoin ransom after cyberattack

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport has been targeted by a ransomware attack, with hackers demanding $6 million in Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) to release encrypted data.

The attack, attributed to the Rhysida ransomware group, occurred in late August, impacting various airport systems.

Although the airport was able to mitigate much of the damage, some files were encrypted, and stolen data was posted on the dark web.

Despite the ransom demand of 100 bitcoins (worth over $6 million), the airport has opted not to pay, viewing it as an inappropriate use of taxpayer money.

Lance Lyttle, the managing director of aviation for the Port of Seattle, confirmed that eight stolen files were posted on the hackers’ dark web site.

Affected individuals will be notified directly.

The attack, which took place on August 24, just before the busy Labor Day weekend, caused disruptions to ticketing, check-in kiosks, and baggage handling systems.

Some smaller airlines had to issue paper boarding passes as a temporary solution.

While the airport managed to prevent more extensive damage, the incident highlights the growing risk of ransomware attacks on public infrastructure.

The FBI is now investigating the attack. Rhysida has also been linked to other recent ransomware incidents, including a data breach in Columbus, Ohio, further underscoring the rising threat to critical systems across the country.

At the time of reporting, the Bitcoin price was $63,808.11.
