Samourai Wallet forked into Ashigaru to enhance user privacy

Samourai Wallet forked into Ashigaru to enhance user privacy

On September 20, a group of developers announced the launch of a new project called the "Ashigaru Open Source Project," a hard fork of the Samourai Wallet.

This new initiative builds upon the foundation of the original Samourai Wallet but introduces its own approach to privacy, security, and censorship resistance.

According to the Ashigaru website, the project is committed to developing and maintaining free, open-source software.

The developers emphasized that Ashigaru aims to offer users privacy and protection from tracking, while maintaining a low barrier to entry.

The wallet will employ mechanisms like CoinJoin to enhance user privacy and reduce exposure to analytical heuristics.

The developers behind Ashigaru identified themselves as former users of Samourai Wallet but clarified that they have no ties to the original core development team.

In their mission statement, they said, "We believe anyone should be able to engage in peaceful, voluntary, and private commerce on the internet without tracking, surveillance, or censorship."

The Ashigaru project relies heavily on public domain code and contributions from various other crypto initiatives to achieve these goals.

This fork comes in the wake of the legal troubles faced by Samourai Wallet’s founders, Keonne Rodriguez and William Hill.

Both were arrested in April 2024 on charges of money laundering, with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) accusing them of facilitating over $2 billion in unlawful transactions.

The FBI also seized the Samourai Wallet’s servers and website, and app stores were directed to remove the application.

Rodriguez pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on bail, while the case remains ongoing.
