Vitalik Buterin criticised by Cardano founder over Ethereum governance
Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano (CRYPTO:ADA), criticised Ethereum’s (CRYPTO:ETH) governance model, claiming that it functions like a "dictatorship" with co-founder Vitalik Buterin wielding significant influence.
In an interview at Token2049 in Singapore, Hoskinson argued that Ethereum relies too much on Buterin for its direction, stating, "Everybody looks to him for the roadmap and inspiration, and he’s the only one who can rally people."
He questioned Ethereum’s future without Buterin, especially when it comes to hard forks and major decisions.
Hoskinson highlighted that Ethereum's roadmap has shifted due to Buterin’s advocacy for rollups and layer-2 solutions, moving away from sharding-based optimisation.
He also criticised Ethereum’s recent focus on "extractive L2s" as activity and fee revenue on Ethereum’s main chain have dropped.
In contrast, Hoskinson emphasised Cardano’s governance overhaul, which aims to avoid both the “anarchy” of Bitcoin and the "dictatorship" of Ethereum.
Cardano’s Voltaire-era governance, supported by a members-based organisation called Intersect, enables the network to function without being overly reliant on any single leader.
"If you have efficiency, effectiveness, and integrity, you can avoid the anarchy of Bitcoin or the dictatorship of Ethereum," Hoskinson stated, referring to Cardano’s approach of using delegates and a collaborative governance model.
Cardano's recent Chang hard fork introduced ADA as a governance token, allowing holders to elect representatives and vote on development proposals.
Hoskinson added that the founding entities behind Cardano, including IOHK and Emurgo, no longer control the network's forks and upgrades.
He noted, "Charles, alive or dead, doesn’t matter. There will still be innovation every day."
Cardano is also working on finalising a constitution to set limits on core issues such as token supply and governance structure, ensuring the network’s long-term decentralisation.
At the time of writing, the Cardano (ADA) price was $0.3898, while the Ethereum (ETH) price was $2,644.68.
