Salesforce CEO sees AI future in agents

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff envisions the future of artificial intelligence (AI) shifting toward autonomous agents rather than large language models (LLMs) like those behind AI chatbots.

Speaking on The Wall Street Journal's "Future of Everything" podcast on November 23, Benioff stated, "We’re hitting the upper limits of the LLMs right now."

He critiqued the enthusiasm surrounding LLM-based tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, commenting, "We’ve all got drunk on the ChatGPT Kool-Aid," suggesting inflated expectations for AI's potential.

Benioff emphasized autonomous agents, or "agentic AI," as the next phase in AI evolution.

These agents operate independently, performing tasks such as managing sales communications and automating marketing campaigns.

He believes agentic AI will help companies streamline operations and replace bureaucracy with an "agentic layer that serves people, not politics."

Salesforce has already integrated agent-based AI into its offerings, particularly for customer service automation.

"We have incredible tools to augment our productivity, to augment our employees, to improve our margins, [and] to improve our revenues," Benioff highlighted.

Despite the potential, Benioff cautioned against overhyping AI’s capabilities.

He criticized "AI evangelists" who suggest AI can solve monumental issues like curing cancer or addressing climate change, calling such claims a "huge disservice" to businesses focused on enhancing operations and customer relationships.

The trend toward agentic AI is gaining traction in the tech industry.

OpenAI plans to release its agent, "Operator," in January 2025, designed to perform tasks like coding and travel bookings autonomously.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang also acknowledged the rise of agentic AI, referring to it as the "latest rage" during the company’s Q3 earnings call on November 20.
