Farcaster founder unveils frames v2 upgrade, aiming to revolutionize Web3 social apps

Its feature enables users to perform functions within Farcaster apps without exiting through a third-party application.

Farcaster, a decentralized social media protocol, has announced a significant update to Frames, a feature that once drove a 400% surge in the protocol’s user base within a week.

The new specification for Frames v2 , introduced by the Farcaster’s founder Dan Romero, on Nov. 26 via X, aims to expand the platform’s capabilities:

A new Frame standard that allows interactive applications, on-chain transactions, and user notifications would enable many new kinds of social applications.

– Dan Romero

Established at the beginning of 2024, Farcaster Frames are instrumental in boosting the popularity of the Optimism-based layer-2 protocol. They resolved early challenges by allowing users to embed small apps within posts on Warpcast, Farcaster’s social media application. Following the Frames launch, daily active users spiked by 400% in early February but have since tapered off.

Frames v2 intends to address v1 limitations

Farcaster is among several decentralized social networking initiatives striving to provide alternatives to centralized platforms like Twitter, alongside projects such as Bluesky, Mastodon, Lens Protocol, Nostr, and Friend.tech.

While successful, Frames v1 faced challenges, including limited interaction capabilities that restricted larger app development, slow image rendering, and an ephemeral state preventing users from revisiting content.

Frames v2 seeks to overcome these hurdles with a more advanced standard that supports full-screen in-app applications, interactive features, on-chain transactions, and user notifications.

Romero explained that developers can build anything that renders in a browser and use a Frames SDK to trigger actions like saving the frame or requesting an on-chain transaction.

Additionally, Romero highlighted improvements in transaction reliability and message signing on mobile through the integration of Mobile Wallet Protocol and Rainbow. A developer preview of Frames v2 was linked in his post.

Farcaster hopes to reignite user engagement with Frames v2 launch and new features

The initial Frames v2 specification will be available on web and mobile starting Nov. 27, with an enhanced version featuring additional functionalities set to launch on Dec. 6. The full stable release is expected in January or February, according to the Frames v2 specification on GitHub.

Despite Frames’ initial success, Farcaster has seen a decline in activity over the past six months. According to Dune Analytics, the protocol currently boasts around 710,000 total users and averages 500,000 casts per day, though daily active users have dropped by approximately 28%.

With Frames v2, Romero and the Farcaster team aim to reinvigorate user engagement and solidify the protocol’s position as a leader in Web3 social innovation.
