Abkhazia faces emergency situation due to illegal miners

Authorities of Abkhazia stated about the emergency situation with energy in the republic, one of the reasons for which was the activity of illegal miners. Today, the region has faced a sharp drop in the water level in the dam of the Inguri hydroelectric power station. This may force the introduction of rolling blackouts and spending additional funds on the purchase of electricity.

It is worth noting that, compared to 2016, electricity consumption in the region has increased by 1 billion kWh, which is caused by the ineffective fight against cryptocurrency mining.

According to the general director of the company "Chernomorenergo", part of the republic may very soon be left without electricity at all. Due to the fact that the water inflow in the dam has sharply decreased, it was necessary to submit an application for the purchase of an additional amount of electricity, which will inevitably lead to its rise in price.

He noted that up to 98% of illegal consumption is due to household mining in residential buildings - such users consume 40,5 MWh of electricity per day, which is 60% of the existing deficit.
If it weren't for mining, the energy situation in the republic would be much better, so it is necessary to find a solution that would allow searches to be carried out in residential buildings.

Acting Prime Minister Valery Bganba called for strengthening the fight against cryptocurrency mining by identifying miners based on energy consumption spikes.
