Biden orders the government executive department to close on January 9, 2025

PANews reported on December 31 that local time on December 30, U.S. President Biden ordered all federal government executive departments and agencies to close on January 9, 2025, as a mark of respect for the late Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States who passed away on the 29th.

In his statement, Biden said that for reasons of national security, defense or other public needs, heads of federal government executive departments and agencies can decide to keep some offices and facilities open. Previously, the White House had declared January 9, 2025 as a national day of mourning in memory of Carter.

Historically speaking, US stock markets would be closed on the national day of mourning during former presidents' funerals; it is expected this will also be true this time. Non-essential federal employees will also take a day off which may affect economic data released that day.
