Japanese investment firm Metaplanet saw its stock price climb 19% on March 5 after acquiring 497 Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) for approximately $44 million.

The firm purchased Bitcoin at an average price of $88,448 per coin, according to Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich.

This latest acquisition brings the company’s total Bitcoin holdings to 2,888 BTC, with an average purchase price of $84,240 per coin.

With Bitcoin trading around $87,150, Metaplanet’s holdings are valued at approximately $251 million.

Bitcoin has experienced an 8.5% decline over the past two weeks, reaching a three-month low of under $79,000 on February 28 amid concerns over potential U.S. trade tariffs.

Despite the market downturn, Metaplanet’s stock price on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 19% by 2 p.m. local time, trading around 3,985 Japanese yen ($26.60), according to Google Finance.

The company had previously acquired 156 BTC on March 3, marking its second Bitcoin purchase in a week.

Gerovich noted that Metaplanet is considering expanding beyond Japan, exploring a potential listing in markets such as the United States.

Metaplanet has acquired 794.5 BTC so far in 2025 and reported gains of approximately $66 million on its Bitcoin holdings in the first quarter of the year.

The firm aims to accumulate 21,000 BTC by 2026 as part of its broader investment strategy.

These recent acquisitions have positioned Metaplanet as the 12th-largest corporate Bitcoin holder globally and the largest in Asia, surpassing Hong Kong-based Boyaa Interactive International, according to BiTBO.

Gerovich met with officials from the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq in late February to discuss increasing accessibility for global investors.

“We are considering the best way to make Metaplanet shares more accessible to investors around the world,” he stated on March 3.

At the time of reporting, the Bitcoin (BTC) price was $87,576.87.
