US Judge Rules Apple Cannot Charge Commissions on Purchases Outside App Store, Apps Can Now Directly Sell NFTs
May 2nd news, according to The Verge, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in the Epic Games vs. Apple case ruled that Apple can no longer charge fees for purchases made outside of apps. This ruling takes immediate effect and prohibits the company from restricting developers from directing users to make purchases outside of the app. Apple stated it will appeal the ruling. Epic Games will relist "Fortnite" on the U.S. App Store "next week." Additionally, according to Apple's developer announcement, the App Review Guidelines have been updated to comply with the U.S. court's ruling on buttons, external links, and other calls to action within apps.
Guideline 3.1.1 states that apps can use in-app purchase functionality to sell and offer services related to non-fungible tokens (NFTs), such as minting, listing, and transferring. Except for apps in the U.S. store, apps must not include buttons, external links, or other calls to action that direct users to purchasing mechanisms other than in-app purchases.
