Bitcoin’s price jumped over 3% to $102,500—briefly touching $104,000—marking its highest level since January. This sudden rise caused nearly $400 million worth of bearish bets (short positions) to be wiped out. Short positions are trades that profit when prices fall. When Bitcoin’s price unexpectedly rose, traders with these positions faced losses too large to maintain their trades, forcing exchanges to automatically close them.
The rally came after two major developments: a new trade deal between the U.K. and the U.S. announced by President Donald Trump, and record-breaking inflows into
Bitcoin ETFs, which exceeded $40 billion. These events increased investor confidence and sparked renewed interest in Bitcoin.
The broader
cryptocurrency market also saw growth, with non-Bitcoin coins gaining 10% in value and the total crypto market cap (excluding Bitcoin) reaching $1.14 trillion—the highest since early March. The large-scale liquidation of bearish bets suggests that many traders were caught off guard, and with fewer short positions now in place, analysts believe Bitcoin might have room to climb even higher in the near future.
