Bond says government induced guilty plea in $400K FTX campaign case

Michelle Bond, wife of former FTX Digital Markets co-CEO Ryan Salame, is seeking dismissal of federal campaign finance charges, alleging prosecutors misled her husband to secure a guilty plea.

In a May 7 court filing in the Southern District of New York, Bond’s lawyers argued that prosecutors used “stealth and deception” by promising Salame they would not charge Bond if he pled guilty, an agreement not formally included in his plea deal.

“Mr. Salame and Ms. Bond’s attorneys were advised that the agreement to cease investigating Ms. Bond could not be placed within the four corners of the Salame plea or other written agreement, but the government still offered it as an inducement to induce the plea,” the filing stated.

Bond faces four counts related to unlawful campaign contributions tied to her unsuccessful 2022 congressional run as a Republican in Long Island.

Prosecutors allege she received $400,000 in fraudulent payments from FTX (CRYPTO:FTT) , arranged by Salame, which were used to finance her campaign illegally.

Salame pleaded guilty to two felony charges in 2023 and was sentenced to over seven years in prison.

He later sought to withdraw his plea, claiming the government broke its promise not to charge Bond, but ultimately dropped that effort and began serving his sentence in October 2024.

The May 7 filing also requests suppression of any statements Bond made after the alleged inducement.

Bond hinted that political motivations influenced the charges, similar to claims made by Salame.

Since FTX’s collapse in 2022, most executives charged with misuse of funds have faced trial or sentencing.

Former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2024, while other executives received varied sentences.

At the time of reporting, the FTX (FTT) price was $1.12.
