Former UFC Champion Conor McGregor Proposes Establishing Irish Bitcoin Reserve, Focuses on Crypto Policies During Presidential Campaign
Former UFC champion Conor McGregor recently proposed the creation of a national Bitcoin reserve during his Irish presidential campaign, claiming that this move would "return power to the people." He stated that he would elaborate on this strategic concept in an upcoming X Spaces and invited Bitcoin community leaders to discuss the details, including "The Pomp Podcast" host Anthony Pompliano and Trump crypto advisor David Bailey, both of whom have responded. McGregor announced his candidacy as an independent candidate in late March 2025, focusing on anti-immigration and crime-fighting issues. If he ultimately wins, Ireland could join the ranks of countries like the United States, El Salvador, and Bhutan in establishing a national Bitcoin reserve. However, McGregor has also been embroiled in controversy recently due to a civil sexual assault conviction (which he has appealed) and a past investigation into hate speech. Additionally, the REAL token project he supported failed in its presale, raising only $390,000, falling short of the $1 million minimum threshold, and has refunded all investors in full.
