US Media: Trump Doubts Whether Bunker-Buster Bombs Can Completely Destroy Iran’s Underground Nuclear Facilities
According to AXIOS, Trump advisors have revealed that a key issue weighing on Trump’s mind recently is whether, if the United States joins the conflict with Israel and deploys massive bunker-buster bombs, it can truly destroy Iran’s most heavily fortified nuclear facilities. On Wednesday, Trump’s doubts about the likelihood of a successful operation were cited as one of the reasons he is still weighing whether to launch a strike. U.S. officials stated that Trump needs confirmation on three points: that such a strike is truly necessary, that it will not drag the U.S. into a prolonged conflict in the Middle East, and most importantly, that it can actually achieve the goal of destroying Iran’s nuclear program. If Trump decides to go to war, it is almost certain that he will target the Fordow nuclear facility. According to U.S. officials, Trump has specifically consulted military advisors about whether a massive bunker-buster bomb could destroy Fordow. Although Pentagon officials have expressed confidence, Trump does not seem fully convinced. Both current and former officials have pointed out that while the bomb has undergone multiple tests, it has never been used in actual combat. (Jin10)
