Criminals Brag After Using Fake Money To Buy $163,000 Worth of Rolex Watches, Gold Chains and Bracelets: Report
A man from Tennessee is reportedly facing charges for allegedly using counterfeit money to buy $160,000 of jewelry from a shop in Boston.
Devin Johnson, 20, is facing one count of larceny over $1,200 after allegedly bragging with his partner in crime over the six-figure jewelry theft on social media, reports Boston.com.
Johnson’s alleged accomplice has yet to be arraigned, according to prosecutors.
The duo is accused of using counterfeit cash to buy several expensive items from a jewelry shop located in Boston’s popular Downtown Crossing shopping area.
The items included a $15,000 rose gold and diamond bracelet, a $50,000 rose gold and diamond chain, a $45,000 Rolex Presidential 40mm watch, a $23,000 Rolex Datejust watch and a $30,000 gold and diamond tennis chain, according to Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden.
Prosecutors say the duo posted videos and still shots celebrating their theft on social media.
In one photo post, the second suspect held a watch with the caption “We made history bro.”
An employee at the jewelry store noticed the money was counterfeit only after putting it through a money counter. The bills had the words “In Prop We Trust” written on them, a statement included on phony money used in the movies.
Prosecutors say Johnson and his partner were identified through surveillance footage and a rented white Ford Bronco registered under his partner’s name.
Says Hayden,
“The facts here outline an incredibly audacious scheme to purchase real jewelry – and hugely expensive jewelry at that – with phony money, which eventually came undone through thorough, tenacious work by Boston police detectives.
These suspects, like so many others, may have thought they got away with something. Like so many others, they thought wrong.”
Johnson is scheduled to appear in court on September 23rd for a pretrial hearing.
