Large-Cap Tech Still Leads as Apple and Amazon Eye Further Gains -- Barrons.com

Large-Cap Tech Still Leads as Apple and Amazon Eye Further Gains -- Barrons.com

By Doug Busch The market's rally is narrow, but large-cap tech still leads. Fewer than a quarter of S&P 500 stocks are trading above their 50-day moving averages, the equal-weight index has been sliding, and the indexes are being carried by a handful of large-cap tech names rather than a broad advance. That is not a reason to abandon what is working. Large-cap tech is where the earnings, the cash, and the incremental demand are still concentrated. Apple and Amazon come to mind. Apple is already proving it. The stock trades just 2% below its all-time high. Amazon is the other side of the same trade. AWS demand and the AI buildout, including a raised 2026 capital-spending plan, give it a clearer growth path than the rest of the market. The Magnificent 7 still look set to grow earnings roughly twice as fast as the other 493 names in the index. Breadth can stay poor. Until the profit growth migrates somewhere else, the money is still better off in the names that are actually producing it. Let's examine the daily charts of each to see where they could head in the near term. Apple, the second-largest company by market cap, is up 30% over the last year. Since the end of July, it has been trading in a range between the very round $300 mark and $345, following a 7% weekly loss in the last week of July, on the second-largest weekly trading volume in the last 14 months. Relative performance against mega-cap tech has improved markedly, with the ratio chart versus the Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF trending higher since May. Absolute price action began turning in mid-April following a breakout above a bearish descending triangle, which resolved into a double-bottom base. That setup was confirmed on July 2 with a jump above its $302.52 trigger, generating a 5% single-day advance. While that initial breakout stalled after three weeks, price action quickly transitioned into a larger cup-with-handle pattern. The stock is currently coiling directly beneath its $345.44 pivot. The handle formation began with a doji on Sept. 22, ech

GlobalFoundries Signs $2 Billion Silicon Supply Deal With Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing

GlobalFoundries Signs $2 Billion Silicon Supply Deal With Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing

12:57 PM EDT, 10/08/2026 (MT Newswires) -- GlobalFoundries (GFS) struck a multi-year $2 billion deal to supply silicon interposers to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) amid growing demand for artificial intelligence. GlobalFoundries will add fabrication capacity at its Malta, New York, facility, and establish the first US-based source of silicon interposers, which enhance the performance and feasibility of semiconductor packaging. Production is expected to begin ramping in the first half of 2028, GlobalFoundries said Thursday. "Advanced packaging is becoming increasingly critical to delivering the performance, power efficiency and scale required for next-generation AI systems," Ed Kaste, senior vice president of CMOS Business at GlobalFoundries, said. The agreement has an initial term of five years and covers a framework for potential capacity expansion, according to GlobalFoundries. GlobalFoundries shares were up 3.2% in Thursday trade, while TSMC's American depositary receipts fell 2.3%. Earlier in October, GlobalFoundries entered into a strategic partnership with Xanadu Quantum Technologies (XNDU) to accelerate utility-scale quantum computing. Last month, GlobalFoundries partnered with SMART Photonics to launch an open-access foundry service for integrated silicon and indium phosphide photonics products. TSMC on Thursday reported revenue of 511.86 billion New Taiwan dollars ($16.02 billion) in September, up 55% from a year earlier. The company's sales declined 0.6% sequentially. In September, Qualcomm (QCOM) agreed to provide custom-built chips and high-speed optical connectivity for Amazon's (AMZN) cloud computing division as part of a collaboration. Stocks Futures Steady as Bond Selloff Extends, Oil Prices Rise

Stocks Futures Steady as Bond Selloff Extends, Oil Prices Rise

By Joe Stonor Nasdaq and S&P 500 futures were little moved in early European trade after the indexes surged to records in the last session, as still-higher Treasury yields and a fresh jump in oil prices failed to knock U.S. stock market exuberance. The "Magnificent Seven"--the mega-cap companies Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta and Tesla--continued to strengthen in premarket trade after powering indexes to new records. Gains were limited elsewhere, however, as futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average futures dropped 0.2%. Futures for the S&P 500 were flat, while Nasdaq futures edged 0.1% lower amid weakness for some chip makers. "The breadth of the rally has narrowed," said UBS Wealth Management Chief Investment Officer Mark Haefele. "The increasing concentration of market gains reinforces the importance of managing risk." Brent crude oil prices rose 0.6% to $101.20 a barrel while WTI prices neared $90 after Houthi militants attacked Saudi airports. Conflict in the Arabian peninsula is escalating after Saudi-backed forces launched a counteroffensive to retake territory along the Red Sea. Treasury yields rose in tandem with oil prices. Ten-year yields added 3.6 basis points to 5.307%, while 30-year yields jumped 4.3 basis points to 5.683%. Higher yields and oil prices dragged the market mood in Asia and Europe. The Korean Kospi slipped 2%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell 0.6%. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 0.9%. In Europe, AI-linked stocks slid as the continent-wide Stoxx 600 fell 0.55%. French government bonds came under renewed pressure as budget talks remain in focus. Ten-year French OAT yield increased 5.4 basis points to 4.806% compared with a 2.2-basis-point rise for 10-year Bund yields. The dollar continued to strengthen as oil prices rose, prompting a fall in bitcoin and gold prices. Bitcoin fell close to $84,100, while New York gold contracts fell 0.7% to $4,159 a troy ounce. For the day ahead, the Federal Reserve will publish minutes from its September policy meeting, adding color to
